Gastrointestinal Lesions And Bleeding in Dogs With Mast Cell Tumours

Scientific Title: Investigation of gastrointestinal lesions and gastrointestinal bleeding in dogs with mast cell tumours by the use of video capsule endoscopy

Study Investigator: Dr. Paul Woods

Purpose of the Clinical Study

Mast cell tumours (MCT) are a type of cancer of the skin and subcutaneous tissues that are relatively common in dogs. Mast cells are involved in the inflammatory response including the release of histamine, which increases stomach acidity. The increased acidity can cause gastritis, vomiting, gastric ulcers and intestinal lesions.

Using a new, non-invasive technology (pill cameras), we can obtain images of a dog’s GI tract to determine the frequency of GI lesions and better understand the relationship between GI lesions and MCT, in order to predict and treat dogs with GI lesions due to MCT in the future.

Is Your Pet Eligible?

Dogs >6kg with a confirmed diagnosis of MCT. On a case-by-case basis, recent treatment with GI protectants will not be an exclusion criteria.

Visits / Samples Required

A single visit is required wherein a 5mL blood sample will be collected and the pill camera administered orally to your dog. For 8-15 hours, your dog will have to wear a recorder and sensor belt. Following the study, the belt will need to be returned to the clinic.

Financial Incentives

The costs associated the capsule endoscopy are covered by the study. If in the event there are complications related to the pill camera, these will also be covered.
