Seal Oil and Salmon Oil for the Treatment of Osteoarthritis

Principle Investigator: Dr. Adronie Verbrugghe

Graduate Student: Brooklyn Liversidge (PhD)

Osteoarthritis is common joint disease in dogs that can cause pain, stiffness and a decreased quality of life over time. Omega-3 fatty acid supplements, like fish oil, are known to help. However, since there is no cure the need for new treatment options remains important. Seal oil may offer similar benefits to support joint health in dogs and provide a new option for managing osteoarthritis.

Inclusion criteria:

  • Dogs with a confirmed diagnosis of osteoarthritis or clinical lameness in one or more limbs (without a formal diagnosis)
  • Neutered male or spayed female
  • Over 4 years of age
  • Body weight over 20kg (45lbs)
  • Currently consuming a commercial dry kibble diet
